The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son FlĂĄvio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, BrasĂlia.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
