New research indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
